Spiral Labyrinth
Majestrum

Welcome to the web page of Matthew Hughes, science fiction and fantasy author.

Special offer for reviewers, bloggers, newsgroup posters and people who just like to talk about books in public: in May, PS Publishing will release Template, a stand-alone Archonate novel that I consider to be my best work yet (even though it was written in 2003). I will send an rtf file of the book to anyone who commits to review, blog, post or otherwise harass the world about it. Just send me an e-mail at "himself(you know what symbol goes in here)archonate.com" and I'll shoot you a copy.

James Nicoll, a gentleman and sf fan extraordinaire, has taken the Template free-read offer an extra mile: via his LiveJournal blog, he is organizing a mass read and review of the novel. The tentative date for the reviews to appear is May 11.

The complete Guth Bandar saga, which appeared in several episodes in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, is now published as a novel, The Commons, from Robert J. Sawyer Books. You can read one of the episodes: here.. And here's a look at the excellent cover art by Cory and Catska Ench.

The first chapter of The Spiral Labyrinth, the second Henghis Hapthorn novel from Night Shade Books, is available for a free read. Click on the link above.

My first Henghis Hapthorn novel, Majestrum, -- read the first 15,000 words here -- is now out in trade paperback from Night Shade Books.

My short story collection, The Gist Hunter & Other Stories, from Night Shade Books is still in stores. It contains all six Henghis Hapthorn stories that have run in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction plus three Guth Bandar novelettes.

Read the first chapter of Black Brillion.

You can also read the first chapters of the previous Archonate books, Fools Errant and Fool Me Twice

The latest news on upcoming magazine stories, readings and so on is here.

My official First Fan, Mike Berro, maintains an info page on my work and a discussion forum.

Night Shade Books has very kindly established a discussion board for my works on their bbs.

Here are a few reviews, and a reasonably up-to-date bibliography.

And here's my bio.
